Partial Dentures: A Cost-Effective Solution for Missing Teeth

Posted on: 24 May 2019

Partial dentures are commonly known as partial plates. They are used to replace teeth that were lost due to disease or injury. They can help replace a single tooth or multiple teeth.

Gaps in teeth cause a multitude of problems. One of these is that they cause the remaining teeth to begin moving at an angle towards the missing space. This causes an overall disruption in the alignment of an individual's teeth. Additionally, gaps in teeth interfere with eating and speaking properly. They cause an individual to become self-conscious as they try not to smile or engage in conversations. Partial dentures help with all of these issues and improve people's quality of life by increasing their self-confidence and helping them to eat and speak better.

Types of Partial Dentures

All partial dentures are removable dental appliances that are made from metal and acrylic. They can be made using just acrylic or a combination of these materials. Here is a brief guide to the types available.

Cast Metal Removable Partial Dentures. These consist of replacement teeth set on top of a metal frame. If these are taken care of properly, they can last a long time.

Acrylic Removable Partial Dentures. These consist of replacement teeth embedded in an acrylic base. They are less durable and more bulky than a cast metal denture, which can be an inconvenience for some and aggravate their gums. They are normally used for a short period of time whilst a long-term solution is sought. However, many people use these acrylic dentures for many years with no issues.

Fixed Bridge. These are mainly used as a solution for one or two missing teeth. These are actually not removable and consist of fixed bridges that stay in the person's mouth with a crown at each end and replacement teeth in between.

Cost of Partial Dentures

As partial dentures are a fairly non-invasive method of replacing missing teeth, they are also the least expensive option compared to other options for replacing missing teeth. Overall, the price of a partial denture used to replace missing teeth will differ depending on each individual's dental needs.

Partial dentures can last a long time if they are well taken care of. If they are regularly cleaned, they can last for years. Dentists will provide specific care instructions when a partial denture is provided to a patient.
